SERDANG, Dec 9 (Bernama) -- Perbadanan Nasional Bhd (Pernas) has allocated RM8 million to open 16 new Gloria Jean's Coffee outlets in 2023, focusing more on shopping malls.
Chairman Datuk Seri Hasni Mohammad, said Pernas is confident in the expansion via its subsidiary, Wonderful Lifestyle Sdn Bhd, following a 50 per cent sales increase in the coffee franchise's sales.
"We are confident this expansion will help create more entrepreneurs in the franchise industry," he told the media after officiating the opening of the 44th Gloria Jean's outlet in the Universiti Putra Malaysia Teaching Hospital here today.
Meanwhile, Hasni said Pernas would be appealing to the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN), previously known as the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs, to channel more funding to develop the franchise industry, which is managed by the Ministry of Entrepreneur and Cooperatives Development (MECD).
He said although Pernas is the agency tasked by MECD to grow the country's franchise industry in cooperation with the Malaysian Franchise Association, funding to develop the sector was directed to KPDN.
“Pernas hopes that development funding (for the franchise industry), currently managed by KPDN, can be transferred to MECD.
“Our role is to develop the franchise industry in its entirety and not just conduct training,” he said.
Hasni said Pernas will be working towards this and hopes that MECD can bring the matter to the Cabinet for an immediate decision to allow development grants to be managed by Pernas and ensure rapid growth for Malaysia's franchise sector.
Hasni also called on more entrepreneurs to be created in line with Pernas' role and commitment to assist all franchisees and franchisors in providing advisory and information services, training, funding and establishing new franchises.
He said that various initiatives had been undertaken to provide entrepreneurs with the opportunities to choose the type of business they wish to venture into.
"A number of programmes and financing facilities have also been prepared to assist entrepreneurs keen to start their own business, especially in the franchise sector," he said.
Hasni said that to date, Pernas had approved RM13 million in financing to 44 Gloria Jean's franchisees and arranged for loans of up to 70 per cent for new entrepreneurs.
Pernas is an agency belonging to the Minister of Finance (Incorporated) that has been given the mandate to lead the development of Malaysia's franchise industry and foster new entrepreneurs in the sector.
One of the agency's main objectives is to establish more local products and expand them to overseas markets.
