BARCELONA (SPAIN) March 7 (Bernama) -- Malaysia celebrated a significant achievement on the global stage as ZTE Corporation was awarded the prestigious GSMA Foundry Innovation Award for its “Minimalist Private 5G for Entertainment” at the Global Mobile Awards during the Mobile World Congress (MWC) Barcelona 2025.
The award recognises the innovative use of ZTE’s 5G-Advanced solution in delivering the world’s first 5G-A-powered live broadcast of the Malaysia National Multi-Sport Games (SUKMA 2024), in collaboration with CelcomDigi, U Mobile and RTM.
Commenting on the award, Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching, who was in Spain for a two-day working visit, said the award was a testament to Malaysia’s position as a gateway to 5G innovation in the ASEAN region.
"It reflects our unwavering commitment to enhancing connectivity, advancing technology, and enriching the lives of Malaysians.
"We remain committed to driving forward regional cooperation and showcasing what is possible when technology meets ambition,” she said.
Teo represented Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil during the working visit.
Other than SUKMA 2024, the solution has been deployed at significant events, including live broadcast interviews partnering with Mobile World Live in MWC Barcelona 2025, leading new trends of industry transformation.
The recognition at MWC Barcelona 2025 affirms Malaysia’s strategic vision as a platform for transformative technological advancement, illustrating the real-world impact of 5G-A connectivity in enhancing live event broadcasting and beyond.
According to the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), Malaysia’s 5G roll-out has now reached 82.4 per cent of populated areas.
The nation has seen growth in several 5G-enabled applications and use cases, including SUKMA 2024. These initiatives have laid the groundwork for a robust digital infrastructure, ensuring high-speed access to more Malaysians and enhancing their ability to enjoy and engage with digital content seamlessly.
The just-concluded MWC brought together global leaders, startups, and advanced technologies to explore how artificial intelligence (AI), 5G Advance, and innovation are shaping the future.
The event, which ran from March 3 to 6, drew over 101,000 visitors and 2,700 global exhibitors.
