KUALA LUMPUR, March 11 (Bernama) -- The F3 – Future of Fish Feed announced the winners of the F3 Krill Replacement Challenge, awarding Brazil-based BRF Ingredients and Germany-based Symrise for their innovative solutions to replace krill in aquaculture feed.
These companies jointly secured the top prize for their groundbreaking products that aim to transform aquaculture feed production and contribute to sustainable practices.
Chair of the F3 – Future of Fish Feed Initiative, Kevin Fitzsimmons said the challenge demonstrated multiple viable solutions to replace krill, which would help protect the oceans while supporting aquaculture growth.
The companies shared the US$100,000 grand prize, awarded during the Opening Plenary Session at the World Aquaculture Society’s Aquaculture 2025 Meeting in New Orleans, Louisiana. (US$1 = RM4.42)
Symrise won for its protein hydrolysate ingredients, while BRF Ingredients won for its chicken hydrolysate, according to a statement.
Their products were chosen as the top performing krill replacements from 10 finalists, tested during a 12-week trial on Atlantic salmon, where they demonstrated superior growth, feed consumption, and survival rates. All products in the trial were verified as free from marine animal ingredients.
The competition also awarded honourable mentions to three companies for their promising krill replacements, namely Calysseo (China), Orffa Additives (Netherlands), and Phileo by Lesaffre (France).
The F3 Krill Replacement Challenge is part of the broader effort to develop sustainable aquaculture feed ingredients, helping reduce environmental impacts caused by wild-caught marine ingredients.
As the global demand for sustainable feed alternatives grows, the F3 Initiative emphasises the importance of reducing reliance on krill and protecting ocean biodiversity, addressing the environmental challenges posed by overfishing, climate change, and industrial harvesting.
The F3 – Future of Fish Feed is set to announce its next competition, focused on whole fish farm production, in the summer of 2025.
