Gardenia takes steps to enhance SOPs in its premises

SHAH ALAM, JULY 23  -- The producer of Gardenia bread, Gardenia Bakeries (KL) Sdn Bhd, has taken steps to enhance its standard operating procedures (SOPs) to prevent the spread of the coronavirus among its workers and keep its supply chains intact to meet customer demand.

Senior manager (Management System & Institutional Relations Halal Committee) Azmy Roslin said apart from implementing the SOPs issued by the National Security Council and the Ministry of Health, the company has taken extra steps to better protect its workers from the pandemic.

Among the extra steps taken is the issuance of the Comprehensive Guidelines For COVID-19 and the Crisis Preparedness Response Team COVID-19 Emergency Response Plan, as well as doing audits on SOP compliance on each department every day.

“For example, we have taken the extra step to separate the production workers as all of them are foreigners and live in hostels,” he told reporters during a visit to the company’s factory.

The factory visit, organised by the Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI), was to recognise Gardenia as a model factory that has followed SOPs throughout the implementation of the National Recovery Plan.

Azmy said the production workers were also separated during meal times in the canteen and their living quarters followed their respective production lines in the factory as part of efforts to control any spread of the coronavirus.

Also, announcements made via posters on SOPs are done in four languages.

He added that Gardenia has taken extra precautions as bread is a staple food in Malaysia and that it has to meet local demand.

“Gardenia controls 65 per cent of the bread market in Malaysia and if our factories are affected because of COVID-19, surely the disruption in our supply chains will impact the market as well as consumers,” he said, noting that Gardenia produces 25 million various food items in a week.

The bakery is also involved in the Public-Private Partnership Industrial Covid-19 Immunisation Programme (PIKAS) where almost all its workers have received the first vaccination dose and are scheduled for the second dose in less than a month.
