FORMER LECTURER CHARGED WITH TERRORISM-RELATED OFFENCES

JOHOR BAHRU, July 21 (Bergambar) -- A former lecturer at an institution of higher learning (IPT) was charged in the Sessions Court here today with four counts of terrorism-related offences.

However, no plea was recorded from Abdullah Daud, 70, after the charges were read out before Judge Fatimah Zahari as the case is under the jurisdiction of the High Court. 

Abdullah is charged with encouraging terrorist acts by instilling the ideology of terrorism linked to the Islamic State (IS) terrorist group and allowing a meeting to be held at his house for terrorist activities.

The offences were allegedly committed in Jalan Takwa, Kampung Melayu Kangkar Pulai here between Sept 3, 2023, and April 14 this year.

The charges are framed under Section 130G(a) and Section 130H(a) of the Penal Code which provides a prison sentence of up to 30 years and a fine upon conviction.

He was also alleged to possess two PDF digital books and an IS-related video on his mobile phone; as well as two books, with the titles “Hakikat Dienul Islam” and “Tarbiyah Jihadiyah” with elements of terrorism and related to IS at the same location between June 23 and 28 this year.

The charges were framed under Section 130JB(1)(a) of the Penal Code which provides imprisonment for up to seven years or with a fine and confiscation of property upon conviction.

 In the same proceeding, a contractor, Mohamad Awang, 48, was also charged with a similar offence for having IS-related items in his mobile phone and laptop at Jalan Nipah 8, Taman Daya here, at 7.05 am last June 23.

No plea was also recorded from him and the court set Sept 18 for mention of both cases.

The prosecution was conducted by deputy public prosecutors Rullizah Abdul Majid and Lina Hanini Ismail, from the Serious Crimes Unit, Attorney General's Chamber, while Abdullah and Mohamad were unrepresented.

Meanwhile, in SEGAMAT, a housewife was charged in the Sessions Court with two counts of giving support and possessing material related to the Daesh terrorists.

Irma Julyanti Buang, 39, nodded, but no plea was recorded from her after the charges were read out before Judge Rahimah Abd Majid.

On the first count, she is charged with giving support to the Daesh terrorist group through social media applications, namely Facebook under the name Bunga Dahlia and TikTok under the name bungadahlia111, at the Batu Muda Police Detention Center, Kuala Lumpur at 10.28 am last June 28.

The charge, framed under Section 130J(1)(a) of the Penal Code,  provides imprisonment for up to 40 years or a fine and forfeiture of property upon conviction.

She is also charged with possession of materials related to the Daesh terrorist group on her mobile phone and laptop which was detected at No. 12, Blok 1, Jalan Kenanga, Felda Moakil, Labis at about 7.10 am last 23 June.

The charge, under Section 130JB(1)(a) of the Penal Code provides a prison sentence not exceeding seven years or a fine and forfeiture of any such substance upon conviction.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Maryam Jamielah Ab Manaff appeared for the prosecution, while Irma Julyanti was unrepresented.

The court fixed Sept 23 for case management for the submission of expert reports and no bail was offered under Section 13 of the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012.
