KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 19 (Bernama) -- A total of 46 Myanmar nationals, including 16 women, were arrested in raids in two states for suspected involvement in migrant smuggling activities and for not possessing valid travel documents.

Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department D3 principal assistant director SAC Soffian Santong said 31 Myanmar nationals were arrested in a flat in Mantin, Negeri Sembilan at 11 pm yesterday while 15 were arrested in a terrace house in Meru, Klang, Selangor at 5 am today.

“The police found that six of these 46 suspects, including a woman, acted as caretakers of transit houses, agents to prepare homes and transporters.

"The six suspects, 30 to 43, are being investigated under Section 26A of the Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants Act (ATIPSOM) 2007 and the Immigration Act 1959/63," he said in a statement here today, adding that the rest of the suspects, 25 men and 15 women, were 22 to 40.

He shared that police investigations revealed the raided locations were managed by the same syndicate, known as the Aun syndicate, which is believed to be smuggling in illegal immigrants overland through the Myanmar-Thailand-Malaysia route.

“The flat in Mantin, Negeri Sembilan and the terrace house in Meru, Selangor are believed to have been used to hide illegal immigrants after they entered the country illegally,” he said, adding that the illegals arrested had paid RM4,000 to agents in Myanmar to be smuggled into the country and were asked to pay an additional RM850 to a Myanmar agent for accommodation and protection while waiting to secure jobs.
