KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 11 (Bernama) -- The Road Transport Department (JPJ) of Kuala Lumpur collected RM428,850 through two auctions involving 253 confiscated vehicles this year, said its director-general Mohd Zaki Ismail.

He said the two public auctions, held in March and today, involved vehicles confiscated for various offences, including not having insurance, cloned vehicles, no driving licence and foreign drivers or riders.

He said the auctions were held three months after the vehicles had been placed in the Kuala Lumpur JPJ impound yard and not reclaimed by their owners.

"When we confiscate a vehicle, it doesn't straight away become government property. They still belong to the original owners, on condition the registered vehicle owners turn up at JPJ to prove they are the rightful owners of the vehicles.

"The owners must also settle the fines and other matters in court for every offence committed before they can take their vehicle out,” he told Bernama today.

Mohd Zaki said that they collected RM93,110 today after auctioning 119 vehicles, comprising 96 motorcycles and five cars, that can be re-registered and 14 motorcycles and four cars that cannot be re-registered.

"Vehicles that can be re-registered are those found to still be in good condition after inspection while those that cannot be re-registered are mostly due to tempered chassis and which are auctioned off as scraps,” he said.
