SHAH ALAM, Oct 7 (Bernama) -- The Selangor Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) and the Central Region Marine Department (JLWT) have conducted a special operation, codenamed Op Jalmar Selangor, aimed at raising awareness of safety issues at sea among passenger boat operators and skippers.

Selangor MMEA director Maritime Captain Abdul Muhaimin Muhammad Salleh said the two-day operation, which ended yesterday, covered the waters off Port Klang and Kuala Selangor, involving 48 MMEA personnel and 21 members of the JLWT.

“The operation aims to raise awareness of safety at sea and the importance of having proper equipment on all boats, while ensuring that operators and skippers comply with the Marine Department's licensing requirements.

“Op Jalmar Selangor was a success for both parties in their efforts to reduce offences by passenger boat operators while promoting maritime safety to prevent any unwanted incidents,” he said in a statement here today.

Abdul Muhaimin said that the operation was divided into two main phases, the first was a knowledge-sharing session by JLWT speakers on common offences under the Merchant Shipping Ordinance (MSO) 1952, and the second involved sea operations.

During the sea operations to inspect passenger boats JLWT’s Maritim Perkasa 35 and Syahbandar 1 vessels were deployed, covering the waters of Port Klang, South Port Jetty Terminal, and Pulau Ketam Jetty.

Abdul Muhaimin said that the operation in the Kuala Selangor waters targeted tourist hostspots, including Sky Mirror, NYC Tour Sky Mirror, Sky Mirror Fun Life, Sky Mirror World, Boat Cafe, and Sky Mirror Kuala Selangor.

He added that 44 inspections were carried out during the operation, resulting in one arrest.
