Boat Capsizes Off Pulau Perhentian : Skipper Pleads Guilty To Drug Abuse

JERTIH, July 3  (Bernama) -- The skipper of a boat which capsized off  Pulau Perhentian last Saturday, killing three of the passengers, pleaded guilty at the Besut Magistrate's Court here to drug abuse.

Azrie Yazid, 22, was charged with self-administration of the drug Nimetazepam, which is listed in Parts III and IV of the First Schedule of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

He was charged with committing the offence at the Narcotics Office, Besut District Headquarters, here at 10.05 am last June 29.

The charge, under Section 15(1) (a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act (ADB) 1952, provides a fine not exceeding RM5,000 or imprisonment for a term not exceeding two years upon conviction.

The court allowed Azrie bail of RM2,500 with one surety and set Sept 4 for mention.

The prosecution was conducted by prosecuting officer Inspector Mohd Zaidi Mat Yasin, while lawyer Norhuda Mohamed Khan, from the National Legal Aid Foundation, represented the accused.
