Marine Police Seize Over 120,000 Contraband Cigarettes In Tumpat

KOTA BHARU, Jan 14 (Bernama) -- The Marine Police Force (PPM) Region Three thwarted the smuggling of cigarettes by seizing 126,400 untaxed cigarettes in a raid at Kampung Kelaboran, Tumpat, near here yesterday.

Its commander, ACP Zulafendy Hassan said the raid was conducted at about 2 pm by a team of officers and members from the PPM Region Three Operations Command in Pengkalan Kubor, following intelligence gathered for over a month.

"In the raid on a residential premises used as a storage facility, the team arrested a 42-year-old man and found a large quantity of untaxed cigarettes," he said in a statement today.

He said the suspect fully cooperated throughout the inspection and was later detained, and the suspect and all the seized items were also referred to the Criminal Investigation Division of the Tumpat district police headquarters for further action.

"The case is being investigated under Section 135(1)(d) of the Customs Act 1967 for suspected possession of uncustomed or prohibited goods as provided under the Customs (Prohibition of Imports) Order 2023.

"The total value of the seizure, including related taxes, amounted to RM255,842.40, and this success is the first case involving cigarette smuggling thwarted by PPM Region Three this year," he added.
