KUALA TERENGGANU, Jan 19 (Bernama) -- A former engineer pleaded not guilty at the Sessions Court here today to a charge of attempting to use counterfeit currency at a gold shop last month.
Ahmad Faisal Mohd Shahrani, 34, changed his plea when the case came up for mention before Judge Mohd Zul Zakiqudin Zulkifli.
The case had initially been fixed for the reading of facts and sentencing after Ahmad Faisal pleaded guilty to the charge on Jan 5.
He was charged with attempting to use counterfeit currency as genuine, namely 359 pieces of RM50 banknotes at a gold shop in Chabang Tiga near here at 3.10 pm on Dec 18, last year.
The charge was brought under Section 489B of the Penal Code, read together with Section 511 of the same law, which provides a jail sentence of up to 20 years and a fine if convicted.
The court allowed Ahmad Faisal bail of RM10,000 with one surety and set Feb 22 for mention.
The proceedings were conducted by Deputy Public Prosecutor Nur Aisyah Mohamad while the accused was represented by lawyer Mohd Hisham Hashim.
