Floods: Number Of Evacuees In Six States Drops To 48,549, Unchanged In Pahang

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 5 (Bernama) -- The number of flood evacuees at temporary relief centres in Kelantan, Terengganu, Kedah, Johor, Perak, and Melaka continued to decline this morning, while the figure in Pahang remained unchanged.

This brings the total number of displaced individuals across the seven flood-affected states to 48,549, down from 52,596 recorded last night. The death toll, however, remains at seven.

In KELANTAN, the number of evacuees in three districts dropped to 34,672 individuals across 87 relief centres, involving 11,041 families, compared to 36,434 reported last night.

According to the Department of Social Welfare’s Info Bencana portal, Tumpat recorded the highest number of evacuees with 19,140 people in 46 centres, followed by Pasir Mas with 15,491 people in 39 centres, and Bachok with 41 individuals placed in two centres.

The Department of Irrigation and Drainage’s (DID) portal (infobanjir.water.gov.my) reported that two major rivers in the state remain above the danger level but are showing a downward trend: Sungai Golok in Rantau Panjang (9.41 metres) and Sungai Golok in Tumpat (3.60 metres).

The number of evacuees in TERENGGANU also decreased this morning, with 7,423 individuals housed in 31 relief centres across six affected districts, compared to 9,315 people recorded last night, according to the Terengganu Disaster Management Secretariat (JBPN).

Kuala Nerus remains the most affected district, with 4,266 individuals from 1,126 families accommodated in 13 relief centres. This is followed by Dungun, where 1,726 people from 397 families are taking shelter in nine centres, and Kuala Terengganu, with 1,253 evacuees from 304 families housed in five centres.

In Setiu, 95 individuals from 18 families are being sheltered in two centres, while Marang accommodates 50 evacuees from 16 families in one relief centre. Hulu Terengganu has 33 people from 12 families housed in one centre.

Meanwhile, in KEDAH, the number of flood evacuees also showed a decrease this morning, dropping to 5,067 people from 1,531 families, compared to 5,428 individuals from 1,642 families last night.

Kedah Civil Defence Force (APM) deputy director Major (PA) Muhammad Suhaimi Mohd Zain reported that all evacuees from the three affected districts remain in 26 relief centres.

“Kota Setar continues to record the highest number of evacuees, with 3,588 individuals from 1,085 families housed in 17 relief centres, followed by Kubang Pasu with 1,117 people from 339 families in six centres, and Pokok Sena with 362 people from 107 families in three centres,” he said in a statement today.

In JOHOR, the number of flood evacuees showed a slight decrease this morning, dropping to 1,009 individuals from 281 families compared to 1,034 people last night. They are currently placed in 18 relief centres.

State Disaster Management Committee chairman Tan Sri Dr Azmi Rohani reported that Segamat has the highest number of evacuees, with 833 people from 232 families sheltering in 16 relief centres, while Tangkak accommodates 176 individuals from 49 families in two centres.

He added that the Sungai Muar station at Jeti Kampung Tekam in Segamat remains above the danger level, with a reading of 4.85 metres. Similarly, the Sungai Muar station in Buloh Kasap recorded a reading of 9.57 metres. However, weather forecasts for the state indicate sunny conditions in eight districts, with only Muar and Tangkak expected to be cloudy this morning.

Meanwhile, two roads in Segamat remain closed to all vehicles due to flooding: Jalan Kuala Paya-Balai Badang and Jalan Tumang. Additionally, Jalan Serakek in the same district is only accessible to heavy vehicles.

In PERAK, the JPBN reported a continued decrease in the number of evacuees this morning, with 167 individuals from 58 families seeking shelter in five relief centres, compared to 172 recorded last night.

A total of 102 evacuees from 36 families are housed in three relief centres in the Kinta district, while 65 individuals from 22 families are taking shelter in two centres in the Perak Tengah district.

The Malaysian Meteorological Department (METMalaysia) has forecast storms and rain this afternoon and evening for several districts in Perak, including Larut, Matang and Selama, Kerian, Perak Tengah, Hilir Perak, Hulu Perak, and Kinta.

Meanwhile, the number of those displaced in MELAKA dropped slightly to 160 individuals from 41 families this morning, down from 162 evacuees from 42 families reported last night, according to the state JPBN.

A total of 109 individuals from 27 families are currently housed at Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Parit Penghulu, while 51 individuals from 14 families are sheltered at SK Seri Mendapat, both in the Jasin district.

In PAHANG, the number of evacuees remained unchanged at 51 individuals as of 8 am, with four relief centres in operation: two in Temerloh, and one each in Bera and Maran, according to the Social Welfare Department’s Info Bencana portal.

The DID’s (Info Banjir) portal reported that Sungai Luit in Kampung Subuh, Maran, has exceeded the danger level, with a reading of 27.02 metres. Additionally, two rivers in Pekan and Maran have surpassed the warning level.
