ASEAN Urges Major Powers To Uphold International Laws, Promote Peace

01/11/2025 10:50 AM

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 1 (Bernama) -- ASEAN has urged major world powers to exercise their influence responsibly, in accordance with international law, and to promote peace, especially amid ongoing global and regional conflicts.

Malaysia’s Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin, in his opening remarks as Chair at the 12th ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting Plus (ADMM-Plus) held here today, stressed that all nations, regardless of size or influence, must stand firm against violations of international law and humanitarian principles.

“Above all, there is one thing we must uphold: the international law. Every nation, large or small, must stand firmly against violations of international law and humanity,” he said.

Mohamed Khaled expressed Malaysia’s deep concern over the worsening humanitarian crisis in Gaza and condemned the use of starvation and deprivation as weapons of war.

“Malaysia urges all nations, especially major powers, to exercise their influence in accordance with international law,” he said, adding that Malaysia also welcomed the United States’ Comprehensive Plan to end the conflict in Gaza.

He also commended Cambodia and Thailand for engaging in constructive dialogue to resolve their border disputes, describing it as a positive example of peaceful conflict resolution within the region.

“Malaysia highly appreciates the support of partners, especially the United States, the rest of ASEAN, and China, in promoting this peaceful resolution,” Mohamed Khaled said.

He urged ASEAN and its partners to remain steadfast in promoting regional stability through cooperation, understanding and respect for international norms.

“In this spirit, let us continue to act together, guided by law, compassion, and the shared pursuit for peace,” he concluded.

The 19th ADMM and the 12th ADMM-Plus Meeting are being held from Oct 20 until Nov 2, with participation from the eight Plus Dialogue Partner countries - the United States, Russia, Australia, China, India, Japan, South Korea and New Zealand.

Established in 2010, the ADMM-Plus serves as a platform for ASEAN defence ministers and their dialogue partners to discuss strategic security issues and enhance regional defence cooperation.
