KUANTAN, Feb 7-- Universiti Malaysia Pahang (UMP) has been conducting health screening on students returning from China after the semester break, as a preventive measure in the wake of the 2019 novel coronavirus infection.

Its health centre director Dr Khairul Salleh Abdul Basit said the screenings are carried out at the health centre and those who have been screened are placed under home surveillance for 14 days before being allowed to proceed with their routine.

"We are aware that they have undergone screening at the airport but UMP is taking these measures as additional precaution.

"Our health centre staff will be visiting those under home surveillance daily to check their body temperature and to take note of anyone showing symptoms of breathing difficulties, cough and sore throat," he told reporters after presentation of education incentives and funds from Bank Rakyat Foundation at UMP Gambang campus here today.

UMP has 66 students from China, but none are from Wuhan or Hubei Province. So far five students who have returned and undergone screening had not shown symptoms of coronavirus infection.

Dr Khairul Salleh said the screening would also be conducted for other international students but they need not be placed under home surveillance adding that local students have been urged to inform the management if they had visited any high-risk countries.

"Should anyone shows worrying symptoms, UMP will contact the Pahang Health Department to have them sent to Tengku Ampuan Afzan Hospital (HTAA), the referral hospital for treatment of coronavirus cases in Pahang," he said.

Meanwhile, Student Services dean Dr Mansor Sulaiman said UMP would be taking in 64 international students from 11 countries for the February intake beginning today.
