BANGKOK, June 10 -- Thai students set to go back to school on Monday (June 14), after the new school year postponed twice this year amid the high number of COVID-19 cases in the kingdom.

The new schooling calender which was initially set for May 17 was postponed to June 1, before pushed further to June 14.

Education Minister Treenuch Thienthong said the ministry has tasked all schools to prepare for the reopening and adjust their teaching to ensure a safe learning environment.

She said schools have options including a face-to-face classroom teaching, online learning, on-air (via satellite TV programme), on-hand (teaching materials to be delivered to students home), on-demand (via mobile applications).

“Schools that choose the on-site approach (attend class physically) must prioritise the safety of students from COVID-19 and provide necessary facilities such as hand-washing stations and spaced seating in classrooms to maintain social distancing.

“They are also urged to include lessons on COVID-19, such as its nature and how to stay safe from the virus,” she said, quoting The Nation.

Treenuch said more than 70 per cent of the 33,000 teachers and school staff in Bangkok and nearby provinces have been inoculated, to date.

Centre for COVID-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) assistant spokesperson Dr Apisamai Srirangsan said schools at maximum and strict controlled areas or ‘dark red zone’ – Bangkok, Nonthaburi, Pathum Thani and Samut Prakan would only allow online learning.

“Face-to-face school session are prohibited in the areas (dark red zone).  Students will study through media platform supported by schools,” she said at COVID-19 daily briefing today.

Over the last 24 hours, Thailand recorded 2,310 new COVID-19 cases and 43 fatalities, bringing the total infections in the kingdom to 187,538 and 1,375 deaths to date.
