COVID: Close contacts main contributors of new cases in Sabah

31/07/2021 10:52 PM

KOTA KINABALU, July 31 -- Close contacts continue to contribute the highest percentage of new COVID-19 cases in Sabah at 48.02 per cent or 497 cases out of 1,035 new cases recorded in Sabah today, said State Local Government and Housing Minister Datuk Masidi Manjun.

He said symptomatic screenings accounted for 251 cases or 24.02 per cent, the second highest daily cases.

"This is a clear sign that the COVID-19 virus is in the community and infection occurs sporadically, that is, we do not know who is infected or how they are infected.

"In this regard, the state government through enforcement agencies will increase monitoring to ensure compliance with all standard operating procedures (SOPs) while increasing vaccination of all residents at a faster rate," he said in a statement, tonight.

He said 76.52 per cent of the cases today were in Category 1 and Category 2.

"Category 1, which has 380 cases, involves those who do not experience any symptoms and Category 2 (412) involves those individuals with mild symptoms. Both categories of patients do not need to be admitted to the hospital for treatment," he said.

Masidi said Kota Kinabalu recorded the highest number of cases at 212, followed by Tawau with 139 cases.

Other districts that recorded more than 30 cases were Tuaran with 72 cases, Telupid (71), Kota Marudu (70), Penampang (67), Sandakan (52), Keningau (49), Beaufort (45), Papar ( 42), Beluran (35), Sipitang (33) and Kinabatangan (33),” he said.

Meanwhile, Masidi, who is also Sabah's official spokesperson on COVID-19, said two new clusters recorded today are the Gambaron Dua cluster in Telupid and Jalan Corak cluster, Tongod.

“The Gambaron Dua cluster is a community cluster in which the virus is believed to have infected mosque congregants and then spread to family members. The index case was a 29-year-old man who had symptoms since July 22, 2021 before being confirmed positive at a Klinik Kesihatan on July 23.

"The Jalan Corak cluster recorded one new case today, bringing the cumulative number of positive cases to 12 cases. The index case for this community category cluster was first detected when a 30-year-old housewife with a fever, cough and cold was confirmed positive for COVID-19 in the Tongod district health office on July 26.
