Family's mad dash to safety as house inundated by rising floodwater

26/05/2022 11:04 PM

TANJUNG MALIM, May 26 (Bernama) -- It was a mad dash to higher ground by a family in Felda Trolak Selatan, when their house was hit by flash floods yesterday.

Arbainah Achel, 70, said yesterday’s flood was the worst she had ever experienced, having lived in the area for almost 50 years.

“At 2.30 pm, the house started to inundate in floodwaters following heavy rain and we were surprised that the water rose so fast, unlike before, where the floodwater level was lower.

“Worried about the situation, we had to dash to the higher ground because we were worried about being swept away by the floods, but thankfully we all safe,” she said when met by reporters here today.

She said that when the incident happened, she had just finished the noon prayers, and the unexpected incident made her worried and sad to see all the household items destroyed by the flood.

“We have yet to finish cleaning up the house following the recent flooding before Aidilfitri, and now suddenly the same disaster hit us, only this time it is worse, with thick mud and difficult to clean,” she said.

She hoped that the state government will take appropriate measures immediately to address the flood problem in the area as it often recurred.

Meanwhile, another resident, Che Roha Baharuddin, 53, said that she had to sleep while still covered in the mud last night as she was too tired from cleaning up the house following the floods yesterday.

The mother of three said that she lived with her 78-year-old father and her youngest daughter who has cancer, and cleaning the house was very difficult because it was badly flooded due to being located near the river.

“I try to clean up the house with the help of my daughter even though she is ill and I have a fever today.

“However, I am very thankful that we were able to go to the upper floor immediately yesterday to save ourselves because the water rose quickly and with very strong currents,” she said.

Heavy rain yesterday afternoon caused several areas in three districts, namely Muallim, Batang Padang and Hilir Perak, to be hit by flash floods and hundreds of victims had to be evacuated to temporary evacuation centres. However, floods in most areas began to recede this morning.
