SHAH ALAM, Nov 24 (Bernama) -- The Selangor government has decided to use special styrofoam blocks as an alternative to overcome the problem of collapsed bunds in Tanjong Karang, which caused flooding in the area.
State Infrastructure and Public Amenities, Agriculture Modernisation and Agro-based Industry Committee chairman Izham Hashim said the method is more suitable because the soil condition at the base of the bunds is soft and unable to withstand strong waves.
He also said the method has proven to be effective in overcoming flood problems in several locations, such as Sungai Lui and Sungai Buah in the Hulu Langat district.
“We will use styrofoam blocks and arrange them like bricks, and the floating material will prevent the waves from damaging the bunds,” he said at a press conference at the Annex Hall lobby here today.
“Because of its effectiveness, the styrofoam method will be expanded to other soft soil areas in stages. This is to prevent the burst bunds incident from recurring,” he added.
Repair work is in progress on two sea embankments that were breached in Tanjong Karang, Kuala Selangor, due to the high tide phenomenon early yesterday morning, which caused flooding in the area.
Kuala Selangor district officer Mohd Raiz Radzuan said the embankments are being repaired by the Selangor Drainage and Irrigation Department and assisted by the residents, but he could not say when it would be completed.
