Elderly couple takes three-hour trip every week to visit bed-bound son
MERSING, Jan 27 (Bernama) -- Every week, partially blind Salleh Marof, 64, and his wife Jamilah Mohamad, 61, travel from their home in Felda Palong Timur 1, Segamat to Kampung Air Papan Tengah, here, which is a three-hour journey, to visit their son who is bed-bound due to chronic gout.
Currently, Mohd Hairul Faqis Salleh, 34, his wife Nor Amirah Omar, 33 and their children are taking shelter at the temporary flood relief centre (PPS) at Sekolah Kebangsaan Air Papan.
Jamilah said she and her husband would try their best to visit their son’s family every week and help in any way that they can, especially after Mohd Hairul Faqis can no longer work.
“But I am thankful we can be here (Mersing) during flood season as we can help our daughter-in-law to manage our son and grandchildren,” she said when met at the PPS today.
Jamilah said despite their own illnesses, they were determined to help ease their son’s burden.
Meanwhile, Nor Amirah said she was grateful to the relevant agencies and the village head for helping her family during such difficult times, adding that they would be immediately evacuated to the PPS whenever flood hit the area.
Nor Amirah has been the family’s breadwinner since March 2021 by selling vehicle spare parts after her husband could no longer operate his workshop due to his deteriorating health.
