Expo 2020 Dubai: NCER SMEs secure RM30 mln potential deals

13/12/2021 02:54 PM

GEORGE TOWN, Dec 13  -- Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) from the Northern Corridor Economic Region (NCER) have secured potential deals and supply contracts worth more than RM30 million during the Week 8 programme at the Malaysia Pavilion of Expo 2020 Dubai.

Themed “Northern Corridor Economic Region (NCER): Your Preferred Investment Destination in Malaysia”, Week 8, which ran from Nov 22 to 26, showcased trade and investment opportunities in the NCER as a preferred investment destination in Malaysia, as well as presented a platform for the NCER SMEs to promote their products and services to the global market.

In a statement, Northern Corridor Implementation Authority (NCIA) chief executive, Datuk Seri Jebasingam Issace John said the success of the NCER SMEs was a testament to the effectiveness of the rakyat-centric human capital and business facilitation programmes that NCIA has put together for the benefit of the rakyat and business communities, in line with the spirit of Keluarga Malaysia.

During the expo, Penang-based snack food manufacturer Haliza Industries Sdn Bhd signed two memoranda of understanding (MoU) worth RM25 million with distributors in Oman and Qatar to supply its Bingo Bite and Witties brand of snacks.

Meanwhile, Kedah-based variety of high-grade coffee and health drinks producer, Fikrisz (M) Sdn Bhd signed a five-year contract worth RM5 million to supply weight loss beverages to Saudi-based Dream Fitness Trading Company, while Perak-based Medic Pets (M) Sdn Bhd inked a RM1.8 million contract with Sadiyat Pharmacy for the distribution of their animal and pet healthcare products for the Dubai market.

Jebasingam said these three SMEs were among the many that have been nurtured through various facilitation and development programmes under NCIA.

These MoUs and agreements are the result of the trans-national business matching sessions, product presentations, pocket talks, and technology demonstrations spearheaded by NCIA and aimed to further develop the SMEs into global players, he explained.

Through business matching and engagements, Jebasingam said 10 NCER SME companies from the manufacturing, biotech, food and beverages (F&B), and services sectors were matched with international traders and distributors from around the world during Week 8 of the Dubai expo.

“NCER is not only an ideal investment destination for high-level investors but there exists a complete business ecosystem that provides a holistic and integrated SME development programme that transforms potential SMEs and equips them with go-to-market knowledge and strategies.

“The economic region has now a strong cadre of SMEs and we are facilitating the export ready ones to explore foreign markets while continuing to develop new entrepreneurs including those from less developed areas,” he said.
