Bursa Malaysia Ends Morning Session Lower

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 14 (Bernama) -- Bursa Malaysia ended the morning session lower as profit-taking continued in selected key heavyweights.  

At 12.30 pm, the FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI (FBM KLCI) was 0.14 per cent or 2.31 points lower at 1,607.21, compared to Tuesday’s close of 1,609.52.

The index, which opened 2.27 points higher at 1,611.79, moved between 1,606.49 and 1,612.63 throughout the session.

However, market breadth was positive with gainers leading losers 466 to 409, while 488 counters were unchanged, 1,105 untraded, and nine suspended.

Turnover stood at 2.14 billion units worth RM1.17 billion.

In a note, Malacca Securities Sdn Bhd said as sentiments turn bullish in the United States (US), the buying interest may spill over to the local stock market.

Traders will also be monitoring key economic data releases, including the US Consumer Price Index later tonight, as well as the US retail sales and manufacturing index later this week, it said.

From the technical perspective, the brokerage firm expects the benchmark index to see resistance at around the 1,614-1,629 level, with support between 1,589 and 1,594.

Among the heavyweights, Maybank was flat at RM10.20, Public Bank slid 4.0 sen to RM4.22, Tenaga and CIMB eased 2.0 sen each to RM13.88 and RM7.40, respectively, while IHH Healthcare rose 2.0 sen to RM6.30.

As for the most active counters, Cape EMS rose 1.0 sen to 46.5 sen, MYEG and Saudee inched up half-a-sen to 91 sen and 2.0 sen, respectively, and Oversea Enterprise was flat at 5.5 sen, while Hubline declined half-a-sen to 8.0 sen. 

On the index board, the FBM Emas Index eased 0.43 of-a-point to 12,244.31, the FBMT 100 Index fell 2.64 points to 11,881.46 and the FBM ACE Index decreased by 13.72 points to 5,374.01.

Meanwhile, the FBM 70 Index rose 49.14 points to 17,807.73 and the FBM Emas Shariah Index edged up 5.13 points to 12,378.19.

Sector-wise, the Energy Index gained 1.0 point to 924.88, the Industrial Products and Services Index added 0.59 of-a-point to 182.11 and the Technology Index increased by 0.16 points to 71.35, while the Financial Services Index shed 27.80 points to 18,184.83 and the Plantation Index trimmed 5.05 points to 7,120.83.
