ALOR GAJAH, Aug 11 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) Melaka branch has conducted a Safe Internet Campaign in 66 schools across the state, involving 2,200 participants, since the start of this year.
State Science, Technology, Innovation and Digital Communications Committee chairman Datuk Fairul Nizam Roslan said the campaign is a high-impact initiative, which underscores the state government’s commitment to shaping a generation which is not only digitally literate, but also responsible in using the internet and social media.
“Alhamdulillah, the implementation of Safe Internet Campaign has gone smoothly so far, with the cooperation of various parties, including the state education department. The campaign will continue in all schools in Melaka until the end of this year, in line with the Ministry of Communications’ directive.
“Safe Internet Campaign aims to raise public awareness, particularly among students and school staff, on the importance of using the internet safely, responsibly, and ethically,” he told reporters, after officiating the Alor Gajah Safe Internet Campaign at Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan Cina (SJKC) Alor Gajah, here, today.
He added that today’s campaign involved 120 pupils and 30 accompanying teachers, from 15 primary schools in Alor Gajah, who were introduced to the cyber world through the level two primary school module.
The module covered topics such as the minimum age requirement for social media users, the dangers of social media, and the differences in content found across platforms.
In another development, Fairul Nizam said that 1,568 online fraud cases were recorded in Melaka from Jan 1 until yesterday, involving total losses of RM51.9 million.
He added that the number of cases continues to rise daily, but various initiatives have been implemented by the state government, through multiple agencies, to raise public awareness and prevent Melaka residents from falling victim to online fraud syndicates.
“The fraud cases involved non-existent job offers, fictitious investments, and love scams, with victims from various age groups and employment backgrounds.
“In addition, cases of online purchase fraud, such as scams involving mobile phones and jewellery, sold through various social media platforms, are reported daily,” he said.
During the campaign, Safe Internet Campaign Digital Advocate Team (K-DAT) icons were also appointed from among the students and teachers of each participating school. They are tasked with raising awareness among their peers on using technology and the internet safely, respectfully, and ethically.
