NEW YORK, Aug 6 (Bernama-QNA) -- Commissioner-General of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), Philippe Lazzarini has called for the safe and unhindered delivery of humanitarian aid to Gaza, warning that hunger has now become the latest killer in the besieged enclave.
In a post on platform X, Lazzarini said that after five months of efforts to replace the coordinated UN response with four Israeli military distribution points, the humanitarian situation has further deteriorated.
He said community distribution centres, supported by partners, had previously been providing food and aid to nearly two million people before famine spread across the Gaza Strip, Qatar News Agency (QNA) reported.
“It is time to deliver aid safely, unhindered, and with dignity,” he said, emphasising the need to allow the United Nations (UN) and its partners to carry out their humanitarian work.
Earlier Tuesday, the UN reported that despite Israel’s recent announcement of a tactical pause to facilitate humanitarian convoys, the volume of aid entering Gaza remains insufficient.
Trucks continue to face delays and restrictions that hinder the effective delivery of assistance.
Since Oct 7, 2023, Israel has carried out a military campaign in the Gaza Strip marked by mass killings, starvation, destruction and displacement, ignoring international appeals and defying orders by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to cease hostilities.
