MTDC picks winner of first MBC 2018

BANGI, Oct 23 (Bernama) – A chicken weighing scale with an Internet of Things (IoT) application designed by DXP from Universiti Malaysia Perlis (Unimap) won first place in the MTDC Business Challenge 2018 (MBC 2018).

The group of undergraduates beat 33 other teams of students from public and private universities, polytechnics and community colleges who took part in the inaugural competition organised from Oct 20 to 23 by the Malaysian Technology Development Corporation and UTM Centre for Student Innovation and Technology Entrepreneurship (UTMXCITE).

The winner received a prize that consisted of RM10,000 in product development funding, RM500 in cash, a hamper and MTDC consultative services.

“A good idea, product validation and a design that is affordable to be marketed by local entrepreneurs is necessary to help the industry achieve Industry 3.0 level,” said MTDC chief executive officer, Datuk Norhalim Yunus.

The teams who placed till fifth position also received product development funding starting from RM3,000 and will be mentored by MTDC for six months.

"After this, if the teams meet the criteria set out, MTDC will channel them to a new entrepreneurship programme under the Commercialisation of Research and Development Fund (CRDF) 1 & 2," said Norhalim at a press conference following the prize-giving and closing ceremony in Hotel Tenera, Bangi.

The 90 participants of MBC 2018 also attended a boot camp, clinic and pitching sessions by speakers and facilitators from MTDC and UTM.
