MTDC and MDEC team up to strengthen digital economy ecosystem

12/04/2022 03:37 PM

CYBERJAYA, April 12 (Bernama) -- The expertise of technology companies under the Malaysian Technology Development Corporation (MTDC) and Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) are being tapped to form a strong digital ecosystem and provide an effective impact to other sectors.

The synergy of the two digital economy leaders in the country was harnessed through the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) here today, with the aim to realise the 12th Malaysia Plan (12MP) and Malaysia Digital Economy Blueprint.

Under the MoU, MTDC and MDEC will jointly develop technology-based entrepreneur development programmes, as well as promote digital technology and adaptation among startups, micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), and small and medium enterprises (SMEs).

MTDC chief executive officer Datuk Norhalim Yunus said the MoU would be a platform for the MTDC Centre of 9 Pillars (Co9P) to work with companies and partners under MDEC to assist Industrial Revolution 4.0 and digital-related companies.

He said MTDC had so far assisted more than 200 companies in developing their potential, and through the latest collaboration with MDEC, it (MTDC) would be able to place special emphasis on funding and guidance for the technology companies involved.

Co9P consists of autonomous robots, simulations, system integration, Internet of Things, cyber security, cloud computing, additive manufacturing, big data, and augmented reality.

"Under Co9P, MTDC is conducting several programmes in the form of advisory and value-added services. We also have a special group that assist them (technology companies) in running their marketing programmes,” he told a press conference after signing the MoU on behalf of MTDC here on Monday.

MDEC was represented by its chief executive officer Mahadhir Aziz.

Meanwhile, Mahadhir said the synergy between MDEC and MTDC, which was harnessed through the MoU, would pave the way for more opportunities to produce more local technology companies that could compete globally.

He said the development of the digital economic ecosystem was very important to ensure that Malaysia had the elements needed to achieve success.

"By having a strong ecosystem, Malaysia will become a destination of choice to foreign investors, in addition to being able to cooperate with local companies," he said.

Under the 12MP, the digital economy is expected to contribute 25.5 per cent to gross domestic product (GDP) by 2025.
