Cyberview Pushes For Equity In Tech Sector In Line With Women's Day

10/03/2023 11:23 PM

KUALA LUMPUR, March 10 (Bernama) -- In conjunction with International Women's Day, Cyberview Sdn Bhd (Cyberview) held a discussion among women tech leaders who shared their thoughts across generations to push for the tech sector to embrace equity.

In a statement today Cyberview said the discussion was held at RekaSpace on March 8 involving Cyberview Head of Technology Hub Division Shafinaz Salim, Skymind chairman Datuk Dr Yasmin Mahmood, Supagene Asia co-founder Nura Samsuddin, BETA Foundation chief executive officer and co-founder Lilyana Abdul Latif and Durioo+ Head of Operations and Experience Nuown Zainal.

The global theme for International Women's Day 2023 is to embrace equity.

It said in the opening remarks, Shafinaz noted that the tech sector has a global equity issue when it comes to women, particularly representations in senior positions.

“She quoted the 30 per cent Club statistic that women in Malaysia made up 28.2 per cent of the top 100 publicly listed boards in Malaysia. The 30 per cent Club is one of Cyberview's ESG (environmental, social and governance) strategic partners,” read the statement.

According to the statement, Yasmin said that Malaysia had come a long way from the 30 per cent board room target it had set in 2013.

“Equity means we are allowed to do what we want to do to the best of our ability, to be given a chance and acknowledge the differences we are having, to be embraced for the challenges as a woman,” she added.

Lilyana said that the corporate world needed equitable rules in measuring work performance in the corporate world according to gender where it “must be equitable and not equal, as women have more responsibilities beyond the job."

Sharing her advice for women in the workforce, Nura was quoted as saying that she believed women should stop being shy and apologetic for being different and focus on their strengths and embrace their weaknesses to move forward.

Meanwhile, Nuown raised the issue of discrimination against mothers who wished to return to the workforce after they stopped working for a few years to care for their children.

"There's no specific formula to achieve work-life balance. We can do our best when playing different roles, but when we need a break, we need to be able to stop and take a break," she added.
