Ibin Recycling Programme For Students Launched In Melaka

JASIN, Nov 22 (Bernama) -- Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Jasin Campus, Melaka has teamed up with SWM Environment Sdn Bhd to launch a pilot Smart Recycling Bin (iBin) programme at four primary schools in the state.

UiTM Melaka Computing, Informatics and Mathematics College Head of Centre of Study Dr Jamaluddin Jasmis said iBin was part of a research project under the Knowledge Transfer and Social Innovation Engagement and Research Helix (KaSEH) initiative undertaken with the Community Engagements Social Research Innovation (CE-SIR) grant.

"It is aimed at inculcating the habit of recycling among students in schools. It is also to strengthen the network of cooperation among all parties in the march towards the sustainable smart city status envisaged by the government,” he said after the launch of recycling bins at Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan Cina (SJKC) Pay Chiao in Bemban here today.

SWM Environment corporate general manager Mohd Norlisam Mohd Nordin said this effort by UiTM was yet another step to facilitate SWM Environment's monitoring and management of recycled products in smart recycling bins.

“This is consistent with SWM Environment's target of increasing the collection of recycled items by 30 per cent under the KITARecycle programme next year and in line with the government's target of achieving a 40 per cent recycling rate by 2025," he said.

At the ceremony, SWM Environment sponsored and handed over 12 units of iBin to four schools, namely Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Merlimau 2, SK Ayer Merbau and SJKC Pay Chiao in Jasin, and SK Sungai Buloh in Alor Gajah.
