14/06/2024 01:07 AM

KUALA LUMPUR, June 13 (Bernama) -- The national men's hockey team is set to embark on a European tour from 1 to 14 July, as part of their preparation for the upcoming Asian Champions Trophy in Inner Mongolia, China, this September.

Head coach, Sarjit Singh said the squad will face a total of seven matches during the two-week tour against Belgium, Germany, the Netherlands and India.

“The players will take a short break now having returned home from Poland and will resume training on June 18, one day after the Hari Raya Haji celebration. The Speedy Tigers will play against Belgium on July 1, 3 and 5, and Germany on July 7 and 9.

“They will then travel to Amsterdam to play against the Dutch on July 12, and conclude their European tour with a match against the visiting Indian team in the Netherlands on July 14,” he said in a statement by the Malaysian Hockey Confederation (MHC) today.

On the Speedy Tigers’ performance in the Nations Cup, Sarjit  said his squad need to  improve their performance by another 15 to 18 per cent, with the focus specifically on drag-flick specialists.

“There is no doubt that performance wise we did pretty well but it was the inexperience in the team that cost us in some matches,” he said.

The Speedy Tigers concluded their 2024 Nations Cup campaign seventh out of nine countries with a 5-4 win over Austria in Gniezno, Poland last week.

The national team finished third in Group B after drawing 4-4 with Pakistan, losing 3-1 to France and beating Canada 4-2 to miss out on the semi-finals.

They then lost 4-3 to South Korea in the fifth to eighth classification match.

The Asian Champions Trophy will take place from Sept 8-17.
