Jokowi Discusses Indonesia-egypt Ties, Interfaith Dialogue With Sheikh Al-azhar

JAKARTA, July 10 (Bernama) -- Indonesian President Joko Widodo and Grand Sheikh Al-Azhar Al-Sharif Prof Dr Ahmad Muhammad Ahmad At-Tayyeb discussed Indonesia’s relations with Egypt on education, peace and interfaith dialogue during their meeting at Merdeka Palace on Tuesday.

The meeting in Jakarta, part of Sheikh Al-Azhar’s Southeast Asia tour which includes Malaysia and Thailand, marks his third visit to Indonesia to promote moderate Islam.

Widodo, also known as Jokowi, during the meeting voiced strong support for the establishment of Al-Azhar Markaz Tatweer branch in Indonesia in light of the significant number of Indonesian students in Egypt.

“Currently, 95 per cent of Indonesian citizens in Egypt are students,” Jokowi said on his official X account posting.

During the discussions, they also underscored the importance of global unity in addressing conflicts and advancing peace, particularly in Gaza, Palestine.

Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi, in a statement issued following the meeting, said Jokowi had emphasised the importance of Sheikh Al-Azhar’s visit in promoting peace and tolerance.
