NEW YORK, Sept 27 (Bernama) -- Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan, during a meeting with the Malaysian diaspora in New York on Thursday, called on them to embrace the role of “ambassador” in promoting Malaysia as a prime destination for trade, investment, and tourism.

Speaking at the Malaysian Diaspora Night in New York, held at the office of Malaysia’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations (UN), Mohamad said that while traditional diplomacy remains crucial, Malaysia must  increasingly focus on trade and investment diplomacy.

He highlighted the importance of positioning Malaysia to attract more global investments, particularly in high-growth sectors, in line with the country’s foreign policy objectives.

"We want our country's trade and investment diplomacy to return to the top rank. In order to reach second or first place (in ASEAN), we must enhance the nation's competitiveness," said Mohamad.

"Tonight, I commission all of you as little ambassadors of Malaysia. Spread the message that Malaysia is a must-visit country, so that we can all see a much better Malaysia in the future," he stated.

Mohamad highlighted the need for Malaysia to attract industries that contribute significant value to the economy and focus on sectors aligned with long-term growth rather than those that rely on lower costs.

Reflecting on Malaysia’s foreign policy, Mohamad reaffirmed Malaysia’s stance as a neutral nation, open to friendly relations with all countries, including the US and China.

He underscored the importance of maintaining a balance between these relationships, especially in terms of investment.

The event, held in conjunction with Mohamad’s visit to New York to represent Malaysia at the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), aimed to strengthen ties between Malaysia and its citizens abroad, encouraging them to contribute to the nation’s growth and development.

He is attending his first UNGA since becoming Foreign Minister in December 2023, and is scheduled to deliver a statement during the High-Level General Debate on Sept 28.

Also present at the event were Malaysia’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Datuk Dr Ahmad Faisal Mohamad and Malaysia’s Consul General in New York Amir Farid Abu Hasan.
