KUCHING, Dec 9 (Bernama) -- The Forest Department Sarawak (FDS) has taken a pivotal step in advancing the state’s climate and sustainability agenda with the issuance of its first carbon license to SaraCarbon Sdn Bhd.
FDS in a statement today said that by adhering to international standards, SaraCarbon intends to produce high-quality carbon credits that meet global market requirements.
"These efforts will contribute to environmental conservation while providing economic benefits, aligning with Sarawak’s strategic objectives of leveraging carbon trading as a viable economic sector.
"This initiative is a testament to Sarawak's progressive approach to addressing climate change through innovative policies and actionable frameworks," it said.
According to the statement, the official handover ceremony was held at FDS headquarters today, where Forests Sarawak director Datuk Hamden Mohammad presented the license to SaraCarbon representative Franscois Blignaut.
It said the company, a Samling Group unit, has established itself as a leader in forest carbon initiatives in Sarawak and is the first company in the state to be granted a forest carbon study permit, awarded during the Asia Carbon Conference 2023.
"SaraCarbon’s projects highlight the potential of leveraging natural resources responsibly, ensuring long-term benefits for the environment and local communities alike," it added.
