KKR Calls For More FM Contractors From Sarawak Construction Sector

04/09/2025 02:24 PM

KUCHING, Sept 4 (Bernama) -- The Works Ministry (KKR) is encouraging more construction companies in Sarawak to register as facility management (FM) contractors, as the number of registered FM companies in the state remains low.

Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi said of the approximately 460 FM companies nationwide, only 17 are based in Sarawak.

"The requirements are the same across all states, but perhaps awareness of the potential in this field has yet to be fully disseminated in Sarawak.

“That’s why we are organising engagement sessions to raise awareness and help those in the construction industry see the opportunities available in facility management,” he told a press conference following the launch of the Sarawak 2025 Facility Management Industry Engagement Session.

When asked if the shortage of FM companies was affecting the rapidly growing construction industry in Sarawak, Nanta said so far, it has not disrupted construction projects, adding that an increase in FM contractors would promote healthy competition and result in more competitive service pricing.

“If there are fewer players, competition is limited, but with more companies, prices could become more competitive due to supply and demand,” he said.

In his opening speech, Nanta also mentioned that the Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) is working to improve the FM sector through initiatives such as FM contractor registration, certification, the development of training modules, and the launch of LCCsoft (Life Cycle Costing Software).

“CIDB is also developing the CIS-FM (Construction Industry Standard for Facility Management), which will standardise best practices nationwide, ensuring that maintenance and asset management are professional and meet international standards,” he added.
