Heed the will of the Rakyat, make good on all manifesto promises - TI-M

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 25 (Bernama) -- Members of Parliament from across the political divide must heed to the will of the Rakyat, and rise above factional politics to reform and govern the country together, said President Transparency International Malaysia (TI-M) Muhammad Mohan.

As such, he said TI-M calls upon the newly-appointed Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and the government to make good on all their manifesto promises without excuses, delays and u-turns.

The manifesto should be fulfilled especially those that have been delayed due to Pakatan Harapan’s last removal from the government after the ‘Sheraton Move’, he said in a statement today.

While congratulating Anwar on the appointment as the 10th Prime Minister of Malaysia, Muhammad said key anti-corruption and governance reforms that must be implemented without delays or watering down include the Political Financing Act, separation of powers for Attorney-General’s Chamber (AGC) and Public Prosecutor and public asset declarations for all elected representatives and senior government officials.

He said the appointment of heads of agencies by the Parliamentary Select Committee, amendments to the Whistle Blower Protection Act and establishment of the MACC as a Commission under the Constitution should also be implemented.

Meanwhile, Myanmar Ethnic Rohingya Human Rights Organization Malaysia (MERHROM) President Zafar Ahmad Abdul Ghani in a separate statement said the new government under Anwar’s leadership era seems crucial to lead Malaysia to a higher level and to develop sustainably.

“We hope the new government will continue to engage with UNHCR for refugee protection and resettlement.

“We need your intervention with the UNHCR and the resettlement countries to increase the quota for the resettlement as there is no sign that we can return home very soon,” he said.

Zafar said MERHROM are delighted to work together on the management of refugees in Malaysia and hoped that the new government will continue its efforts in providing education to the refugees as well as other basic rights.

Meanwhile, the American Malaysian Chamber of Commerce (AMCHAM) chief executive officer Siobhan Das said the American business community looked forward to the formation of a unity government that will focus on economic fundamentals and maintain a firm commitment to policies.

She said the focus is fundamental to bolster Malaysia’s business competitiveness and openness to global trade and a digitally-driven public services delivery that focuses on efficiency and productivity will drive more investments into the country.

“AMCHAM will continue to build a strong working relationship with the new government along with its ministries and agencies, to ensure that Malaysia’s well-established brand as a destination for growth and investment is protected and enhanced from a global perspective,” she said.

Sharing a similar sentiment, G25 Malaysia hopes the new parliament learns from the legislatures in advanced countries where parliament plays a meaningful and effective role.

The G25 in a statement also called upon the new government to introduce institutional reforms in the Attorney General’s Chambers, the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission, the Election Commission, and the police force, as they have long been advocated by civil society organisations including G25.

“The government should also adopt a fiscal policy that is realistic and implements a multiracial approach in its policies and development programmes without using race and religion to divide the people.

“All poor and deserving Malaysians should have equal access to government assistance, especially in education, welfare programmes and applying for government jobs. There must be no discrimination. The main beneficiaries will be Malays and other Bumiputeras as they form the majority in the population,” it said.
