Nenggiri Polls: Vast Area Among Challenges For Candidates

04/08/2024 08:13 PM

GUA MUSANG, Aug 4 (Bernama) -- The vast Nenggiri state constituency, which is nearly twice the size of Melaka, is seen as one of the significant challenges for candidates in the by-election.

However, Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate Mohd Azmawi Fikri Abdul Ghani, also known as Awie, said this challenge does not hinder his efforts to engage every voter in the constituency.

Speaking to reporters on the second day of the campaign in Kampung Bertam Baharu, about a 45-minute drive from Gua Musang town, he said this situation would test his ability to effectively serve as a people’s representative.

“Feedback from voters indicates their desire for a representative who is always in touch with the people.

“While development is important, it is even more crucial for a representative to be present and connected with the people. The power is in the hands of the people, and if elected but fail to serve them, we will be rejected in five years,” he said.

Mohd Azmawi Fikri, who will face PAS candidate Mohd Rizwadi Ismail in the by-election, said the Nenggiri constituency comprises nine traditional villages, five Orang Asli district polling centres (PDM), five Kesedar PDM and one Felda area.

“Therefore, careful planning and timeliness are crucial. We often hear about flight delays, but today my boat journey was delayed due to high water levels, and we need to be cautious for safety,” he said.

Regarding development in the constituency, he said the focus would be on boosting the local economy through the Nenggiri Hydroelectric Project, set to start operations in 2027, and the Central Spine Road project.

“Both projects can create job opportunities and have a positive economic impact. It is crucial to ensure the benefits from these projects reach the people of Nenggiri,” he said.

The by-election was called after Kelantan State Assembly Speaker declared the seat vacant on June 19 because its assemblyman, Mohd Azizi Abu Naim, had ceased to be a member of Bersatu on June 13.

The Election Commission has set the polling day for Aug 17, while early voting on Aug 13 will not be held, as all 14 voters have applied for postal voting.
