Nenggiri Polls: Dedicated guides Support Voters’ Needs

17/08/2024 05:08 PM

GUA MUSANG, Aug 17 (Bernama) -- During each election, voters who need assistance often turn to Election Commission (EC) workers, particularly the guides, for support.

These guides, easily identifiable by their EC vests, offer services such as wheelchair assistance and escorting voters to their respective polling stations to ensure a smooth voting process.

Mohd Izzat Haron, 46, shared that before the polling centre opens at 8 am, he would ensure the wheelchairs are in good condition.

“This is to ensure that I’m always ready to assist any voter who needs help, especially those unable to walk long distances to the polling station.

“I also make sure that voters are directed to the correct polling station and escort them back to the gate before their family members arrive to take them home,” he told Bernama at the polling centre at Sekolah Kebangsaan Jeram Tekoh here today.

The school is one of 20 polling centres for the Nenggiri state by-election, which opened at 8 am today.

Another election worker, Mohamad Helmi Hassan, 33, expressed his passion for the role, stating that he enjoys helping voters, especially the elderly.

“My area has many elderly and ill individuals, so assisting my community brings me great joy and fulfilment.

“This is not about showing off but demonstrating that we care for those in need,” said Mohamad Helmi, who has served as a guide in four previous elections.

The Nenggiri by-election is a straight fight between Barisan Nasional’s Mohd Azmawi Fikri Abdul Ghani, representing the Unity Government, and PAS candidate Mohd Rizwadi Ismail, who is contesting for Perikatan Nasional.

It was called after Kelantan State Assembly Speaker Datuk Mohd Amar Nik Abdullah declared the seat vacant on June 19 because its assemblyman, Mohd Azizi Abu Naim, had ceased to be a Bersatu member on June 13.
