16/01/2026 08:21 PM

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 16 (Bernama) -- UMNO will only hold its party polls after the 16th General Election (GE16), said UMNO president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

He said this is possible due to the amendment to the party's constitution at the Special UMNO General Assembly in 2022.

"We will wait until after the general election. We have a period of 18 months, the UMNO Constitution was amended, namely it can be held 18 months from the end of the election year or after the general election, whichever comes first,” said Ahmad Zahid, who is also the Deputy Prime Minister.

He said this when met by reporters after attending the exchange of memorandum of understanding (MoU) and memorandum of cooperation (MoC) in conjunction with the Agrocommodity, Women in Halal Industry Expo here today.

Based on the amendment to the party's constitution, the postponement cannot exceed 18 months from the date the elections should have been held or six months after a General Election.

The UMNO election was last held in 2023, with the president and deputy president's posts not contested.
