KOTA KINABALU, June 11 -- The pass percentage gap between Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) candidates in rural and urban areas in Sabah has reduced to 0.53 per cent in 2020 from 1.34 per cent in the previous year.

State Education director Datuk Dr Mistirine Radin in a statement today said 60 schools in the urban areas had recorded a 91.12 per cent pass compared to 151 schools in rural areas which recorded a 90.59 per cent pass in all subjects.

She said the percentage of candidates who were able to obtain the SPM certificate had also risen to 90.42 per cent from the total 33,454 candidates who sat for the examination last year, compared to 87.79 per cent from 33,541 candidates in 2019.

“Twelve schools recorded 100 per cent pass in the 2020 examination...241 candidates scored straight As compared to only 198 in 2019 and 152 in 2018.

“The achievement of Sabah SPM candidates for 2020 shows an improvement in terms of quality as measured by the state average grade (GPN) of 5.34 compared to 5.38 in 2019. A smaller GPN value indicates better achievement,” she said.

Mistirine also she was proud of the efforts and achievement of the students and teachers despite facing various challenges due to the spread of COVID-19.
