Car Workshop Owner Hit Hard By Floods In Alor Gajah

ALOR GAJAH, Aug 12 (Bernama) -- A man running a vehicle repair service in front of his home suffered heavy losses after floods struck Kampung Sungai Jernih, Lubok China, damaging more than five cars belonging to his customers yesterday.

Mohd Hasim Yusof, 59, said that his home, where he has lived with his wife, Dayang Mimi Awang Nuwie, 57, for over 15 years, was inundated with water up to chest level, carrying a mix of mud and debris.

He said the incident, which occurred at approximately 10.30 am, resulted in damage to all electrical appliances, furniture, and other household items.

“The floods this time is the worst I’ve experienced since living here...previous floods also affected houses, but the water only rose to ankle level.

“The heavy rain that lasted for hours yesterday caused water to flood into our house rapidly, including through the kitchen window, making it impossible to save our household items,” he said when met by reporters at his home here today.

The father of six said that, as of this afternoon, his house has not yet been fully cleaned due to the extensive damage and the large area affected.

Meanwhile, Dayang Mimi reported that the floods submerged the motor of her sewing machine, potentially causing damage and affecting her ability to fulfil customer orders.

“Alhamdulillah, I managed to save the completed orders by moving them to a higher place, but I am unsure about the condition of the sewing machine as it has not yet been turned on,” said Dayang Mimi, who has been running her tailoring business for 15 years.

Dayang Mimi said that the floods also forced her family to evacuate to the relief centre at Sekolah Rendah Sungai Jernih around 10pm last night.

Another resident Ahmad Said, 69, said the floods caused muddy waters to rise to knee height in his home and also brought in wood and tree branches, following heavy rain that began at 8.30am

The father of three said the incident happened too quickly that they were unable to save important documents, household appliances, and furniture.

“I didn’t expect the floods to be as bad as this...there was no time for advance preparation and I could only save myself,” he said.

As of noon today, the number of flood victims in Alor Gajah has increased to 419 people from 123 families, compared to 360 people from 109 families reported at 8 am.
