Elephant Attack: Perhilitan Continues To Monitor Kampung Basung

KUALA TERENGGANU, Oct 5 (Bernama) -- The Department of Wildlife and National Parks Peninsular Malaysia (Perhilitan) will continue its monitoring in Kampung Basung, Kuala Berang, to track wild elephants believed to have caused the death of an elderly man today.

Police confirmed that Musa Ahmad, 65, was attacked by a herd of wild elephants this morning.

Terengganu Perhilitan director Loo Kean Seong said the monitoring in the village began last week following a report of wild elephants destroying villagers’ crops.

Speaking to Bernama today, he said the department would continue monitoring the area and decide whether to drive away or relocate the animals when they detect them.

Loo advised villagers to keep their distance and avoid provoking the animals, urging them to report the location of any elephant sightings to Perhilitan immediately.

“The public is also advised not to enter their orchards alone…and not let them become overgrown or neglected as wild animals can easily hide in the bushes,” he said.

Meanwhile, Loo said Terengganu Perhilitan has conducted five elephant relocation operations across the state from January to last month.
