Malaysia Halal Seminar In Namibia Highlights Certification Opportunities, Trade Expansion

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 3 (Bernama) -- The High Commission of Malaysia in Windhoek, Namibia, hosted a Malaysia Halal Seminar on Monday, to address the growing demand for understanding Halal certification processes and how the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (JAKIM) could assist Namibian products in obtaining Halal certification.

This event was organised in response to rising interest from Namibian Halal associations seeking guidance on Halal issues.

The seminar drew participation from 15 to 20 representatives of various Halal bodies in Namibia, including the Islamic Halal Council of Namibia, the Namibian Islamic Halal Association, and the Islamic Council of Namibia.

Currently, most products in Namibia are certified by local Halal associations or by Halal certification bodies in neighbouring South Africa. 

Acting High Commissioner of Malaysia to Namibia Datuk Dr Mohamad Rameez Yahaya in his welcoming remarks emphasised the significance of the seminar as a precursor to a larger event planned for next year, which aims to explore greater opportunities in the Halal markets.

He said that "Halal" or permissible, as referenced in the Quran, pertains not only to food and drinks but also to various aspects of life including finance, clothing, and behaviour highlighting the importance of understanding and implementing comprehensive Halal standards.

Rameez also introduced the seminar's guest speaker who was from the Malaysia Halal Council Secretariat from the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (Jakim), Senior Assistant Director Dr Johair Ab Latiff, who provided valuable insights into the Halal certification process.

The seminar included a Q&A session moderated by Rameez, allowing participants to discuss critical issues related to Halal certification. 

Among the key topics raised were the need for human capacity development training for Namibians interested in the Halal industry and advice on how fragmented Halal associations in Namibia could unite to achieve JAKIM certification and recognition. 

This would enable Namibian agro-products to be exported to Malaysia, enhancing trade and investment opportunities between the two nations.
