Padi Farmers In Kedah Receive Takaful Flood Compensation

JERLUN, Feb 27 (Bernama) – Farmers in Kedah affected by recent floods received much-needed financial relief today through the Padi Crop Takaful Scheme, with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim presenting compensation cheques to five Area Farmer’s Organisations (PPK) in the Muda Agricultural Development Area (MADA).

Syafiq Azril Mohd Nasis, a member of PPK A-III Hutan Kampung said he is grateful to the government, noting that the compensation would help cover the high cost of planting padi, after suffering significant losses during the flood.

“The padi was between 45 and 50 days old, so the costs were quite high. At least this assistance can help fund the start of the next planting season,” he said.

Mohamad Dzohir Hamid from PPK H-II Kepala Batas also thanked the government, explaining that the flood struck when the padi was already a month old, making the losses even harder to bear.

“At least this compensation offers some relief,” he added.

Other members including Zainol Abidin Mohd Noor from PPK D-II Tunjang, Mohd Shukri Samsuddin from PPK A-II Kodiang and Abdollah Ismail from PPK G-II Jitra, also voiced their appreciation for the government’s support. 

Earlier, Anwar launched the Infrastructure Development Project worth nearly RM1 billion in Ayer Hitam to support the Five-Season Padi Planting Over Two Years programme. 

Announced in the 2025 Budget, the project will cover 11,000 hectares, increase yields by 15 percent and boost incomes by 43 percent for 6,100 farmers. 

Anwar also unveiled a RM15 million contribution from Padiberas Nasional Bhd to aid farmers nationwide in preparation for Ramadan and Syawal.
