Wushu, Road Cycling To Kick Off SUKMA 2024 Gold Rush

KUCHING, Aug 13 (Bernama) -- A historic start will be made at the 2024 Malaysia Games (SUKMA) which is scheduled to officially take place in Sarawak from August 17 to 24 with wushu and road cycling raising the gold medal curtain of the biennial event tomorrow.

The two sports are expected to be the main focus when the best athletes from all over the country will compete to win the prestigious gold and start the adrenalin rush in the competitive campaign.

A total of six gold medals in the taolu discipline are up for grab tomorrow for the wushu that combines elements of martial arts and aesthetic movements which require skills, precision, and exceptional mental focus.

With the expected great performance of the young athletes, the audience will be excited to witness the elegant and energetic movements in each contested category, whether in the form of taolu (routine) or sanda (battle) which is scheduled to take place as early as 9 am at the SSC Wushu Hall, Petra Jaya.

Melaka, Selangor, Penang and Sarawak are among those expected to excel in the event based on their excellent performance in the previous games.

Meanwhile, the highway cycling competition at Pehin Sri Adenan Satem Highway here, which is also scheduled to start at 9 am, will be the main stage for the first gold of the Games through the men's and women's time trial events.

Wushu and highway cycling offered a total of 28 and eight gold medals respectively in this 21st edition.

With the two events opening the golden curtain at SUKMA 2024, several sports will also kick off such as men's football, cricket, lawn bowl, women's football, futsal and sepak takraw. 

High sportsmanship and healthy competition will be the main theme, while each gold won will be a symbol of hard work, dedication, and fighting spirit of the country's athletes.

All eyes will be on the wushu and road cycling events tomorrow, with high hopes that the first gold will inspire other athletes to continue to fight and make the state and country famous at the SUKMA arena.

SUKMA 2024, which will be held in nine divisions of Sarawak, will see contest in  37 types of sports involving 488 events comprising 236 men's events, 217 (women's) and another 35 mixed events for men and women, besides expected to bring together 12,619 athletes and officials.

SUKMA, which was introduced in 1986, has been organised in Sarawak twice, in 1990 and 2016.
