KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 22 (Bernama) -- Kuala Lumpur City (KL City) FC kicked off their campaign in the inaugural Shopee Cup tournament on a positive note, securing a narrow 1-0 win over Philippine Football League champions, Kaya FC-Iloilo, in a Group B match at the Kuala Lumpur Football Stadium, Cheras, here tonight.
Young striker Muhammad Haqimi Azim Rosli was the hero for the City Boys, with his lone goal in the 12th minute proving enough to secure all three points.
Despite the visitors, coached by Yu Hoshide, having more than 50 percent possession throughout the match, they were unable to break through the defence of KL City under the guidance of coach Miroslav Kuljanac.
In other Group B matches, Cong An Ha Noi FC from Vietnam defeated Thailand’s Buriram United FC 2-1, while Indonesia's Borneo FC Samarinda crushed Singapore's Lion City Sailors FC 3-0.
Only the top two teams from each group will advance to the semi-finals in this competition featuring clubs from Southeast Asia.
The two-legged semi-finals will take place on April 2 and 30, while the two-legged final is scheduled for May 14 and 21, 2025.
