Liek Hou Plans To Help Former Athletes With Paralympic Incentive

11/09/2024 11:44 PM

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 11 (Bernama) – National para badminton ace Cheah Liek Hou has another plan for spending the RM1 million incentive he received following his gold medal victory at the Paris 2024 Paralympics.

The 36-year-old athlete said besides helping those in need, he would also donate a portion of his winnings to assist former athletes who were less fortunate.

“Three years ago, I made donations to charity organisations, orphanages, people with disabilities (OKU), and old folks’ homes. This time, there’s a slight difference; I want to help former athletes who are struggling.

“So, I might contribute some donations to retired athletes who are physically challenged or in dire situations,” he told the media at an event hosted by a watch company here today.

Liek Hou secured Malaysia’s first gold at the Paris 2024 Paralympics after defeating Indonesia’s Suryo Nugroho, 21-13, 21-15, in the final.

Meanwhile, Liek Hou reiterated his decision not to hang up his racket anytime soon.

He said any retirement plans would only be known after the 2026 Asian Para Games in Nagoya, Japan.

“I will evaluate myself after two years at the Asian Para Games. If my body is still capable, healthy, and fit, I will continue,” he said.
