MHC Seeks Govt Aid For Youth Teams' Asian Cup Campaign

26/09/2024 06:07 PM

JOHOR BAHRU, Sept 26 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Hockey Confederation (MHC) hopes the Ministry of Youth and Sports (KBS) will fund the men's and women's youth hockey teams preparing for the Asian Youth Cup tournament in Oman this November.

MHC president Datuk Seri Subahan Kamal said the KBS allocation through the National Sports Council (MSN) was needed to help cover the cost of flight tickets, logistics and accommodation for the team and coaches.

He said the Asian Youth Cup tournament is vital for the national team's qualification to the Junior World Cup in India next year.

"This national youth team is not included in the MSN programme even though they are playing for the country and (seeking) to qualify for the Junior World Cup.

"So, all expenses are covered by MHC. This is not complaining but I understand MSN's situation, because of money constraints and so on, but that will also place our team at a disadvantage," he said.

Subahan spoke at a press conference today after the cheque presentation ceremony for the 12th Sultan of Johor Cup Hockey Tournament.

He added that the total cost for both teams to compete in the Asian Youth Cup in Oman was estimated to be over RM600,000.

"We have to qualify for the Junior World Cup but the cost is huge and there is (also)  a need to bear many (other) costs. Therefore, we really need help and hope this matter gets attention," he said.

Accordingly, Subahan said he would meet with Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh soon to inform her on the matter.

"Through this meeting, we will apply if possible for assistance (allocation) and hope that this matter will receive the Minister's attention and consideration," he said.
