KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 14 -- Sahana Kaur,17, and Mogesh Sababathy, 23, two young Malaysian environmentalists will be attending the Youth4Climate: Driving Ambition conference in Milan, Italy from Sept 28-30.
They are among the 400 young participants around the world who will attend the youth summit, as one of the preparatory steps to the United Nations Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26) hosted by the UK in partnership with Italy in Glasgow on November.
“At Youth4Climate, delegates will form four working groups namely youth driving ambition, sustainable recovery, non-state actor engagement and climate-conscious society.
“Delegates are expected to come up with a youth declaration and engage in a dialogue with negotiators and ministers attending the Pre-COP, a preparatory meeting of the COP26, which will also be held in Milan from this Sept 30 to Oct 2,” said a statement issued jointly by the Italian embassy and British High Commission in Kuala Lumpur today.
The statement said, Italian Ambassador to Malaysia Cristiano Maggipinto and the UK Deputy High Commissioner to Malaysia David Thomas had congratulated Sahana and Mogesh recently via a video conference.
During the meeting, they exchanged views on the contributions of Malaysian youth to climate action and solutions.
Meanwhile, Sahana, a secondary school student said she is excited to work with young people from around the world to co-develop climate-related solutions particularly in terms of climate education reform, sustainable recovery and making NDC review processes more transparent.
The Chair of Amnesty International Malaysia’s Youth Committee said she is keen on institutionalising youth representation in policy-making processes, adding she has co-organised YOUNGO’s 2021 Action for Climate Empowerment (ACE) Youth Forum, which produced policy outputs for the new ACE Work Programme to be negotiated at COP26.
Mogesh, a graduate in marine biology from Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) and currently a PhD candidate at Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), said he is thrilled to help elevate the voices of Malaysian youths and use the opportunity of Youth4Climate to exchange views and discuss potential solutions.
