Man Arrested In France On Suspicion Of Planning Violent Acts

PARIS, July 26 (Bernama-dpa) - French police detained a man on suspicion of terrorism a day before the opening of the Olympic Games in Paris, the national anti-terrorism prosecutor's office said on Thursday, German news agency (dpa) reported.

The 18-year-old had been in contact with another man who had already been taken into custody on Tuesday. The two are suspected of having prepared "violent acts," the office said.

They were planning an attack during the Olympic Games, according to local media reports, though the public prosecutor's office did not comment on these.

They are still investigating how far advanced the plans were, they said.

The Olympic Games begin on Friday with the first-ever opening ceremony outside a stadium, with athletes parading on boats on the Seine and hundreds of thousands expected to watch from the riverbanks. The games run until August 11.

There is a massive security presence in the city with tens of thousands of French police and the military working to protect the 10,500 athletes from more than 200 countries.

France declared the highest terror alert level in March.

At the end of May, investigators foiled plans for an Islamist terrorist attack on a football match during the Olympic Games.

Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin said two proven plans to attack the Olympics have been foiled so far.
