JAKARTA, Aug 8 (Bernama-ANTARA) -- Indonesian Minister of Foreign Affairs Retno Marsudi affirmed that the Indonesian government continues to focus on efforts to achieve peace and a ceasefire in Palestine after Yahya Sinwar was elected as head of the Hamas Political Bureau, reported ANTARA news agency.

"We are focused on efforts to resolve peace. We are pushing for a ceasefire," the minister stated at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta on Thursday.

She remarked that, in addition to efforts for a ceasefire, Indonesia continues to push for the unhindered provision of humanitarian aid and the realisation of peace based on a two-state solution.

Marsudi said that she would meet a delegation from Palestine to reaffirm Indonesia's support for the Palestinian people's struggle for independence.

She emphasised that the Indonesian government is at the forefront of supporting Palestine's membership in the UN and recognising the existence of the Palestinian state.

Indonesia also tried to ensure that the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) can work without disruption, she added.

Hamas reportedly will continue the ceasefire negotiations in Gaza after the election of Yahya Sinwar as their new political chief.

"The negotiations are carried out by the leaders, and Sinwar is also involved. He is part of the details," Osama Hamdan, a top Hamas leader, told Turkey's Anadolu Agency on Wednesday.

Sinwar was appointed to replace Ismail Haniyeh, who was assassinated in Tehran on July 31 while he was in the Iranian capital to attend Masoud Pezeshkian's inauguration as the country's new president.
