Palestinian Presidency Holds US Government Responsible For Israeli School ‘Massacre’

10/08/2024 10:56 PM

ANKARA, Aug 10 (Bernama-Anadolu) – The Palestinian presidency on Saturday held the United States (US) government responsible for Israel’s attack on a school sheltering displaced Palestinians in central Gaza, Anadolu Agency reported.

In a statement, Nabih Abu Rudeineh, spokesperson for the Palestinian Presidency, condemned the attack and stated that the US administration is “responsible for the massacre due to its financial, military, and political support for Israel,” according to Palestine News and Info Agency (WAFA).

Early on Saturday, the Israeli army targeted the Al-Taba'een school in the Al-Daraj neighbourhood with missiles, killing at least 100 Palestinians. The school was housing displaced people, according to the Government Media Office in Gaza.

“The Israeli strikes targeted the displaced people while performing Fajr (dawn) prayers, [which] led to a rapid rise in the number of casualties,” the media office said.

Abu Rudeineh said that “this attack is part of a pattern of daily atrocities committed by Israeli occupation forces in Gaza and the West Bank.”

He accused Israel of “attempting to annihilate the Palestinian people through collective massacres and daily killings while international silence continues.”

The spokesman noted that the recent attack occurred just as the US announced US$3.5 billion in military aid to Israel “implicating the US in the ongoing genocide,” according to the news agency.

Abu Rudeineh called on the US to press Israel to cease its attacks and adhere to international law, urging “an end to the blind support that leads to the killing of thousands of innocent civilians, including children, women, and the elderly.”

Separately, Rawhi Fattouh, the president of the Palestinian National Council, the legislative body of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), condemned the "horrific and brutal massacre" carried out by the Israeli forces.

In a statement, Fattouh denounced the "shameful silence of the international community" in the face of the Israeli bombing, calling it a "stain and a black mark on the face of democracy and human rights principles."

He also criticised the US administration for its support of the Israeli government with US$3.5 billion in arms deals, accusing it of being a “strong partner in the genocide and ethnic cleansing.”

He called on the international community to move beyond its "timid condemnation" of the killing of women and children and urged for the issuance of arrest warrants for “the perpetrators of this fascist right-wing government.”

The Israeli onslaught against the Gaza Strip has killed nearly 39,800 people since October 7.
