MOSCOW, Aug 18 (Bernama-Sputnik) -- A magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck off the coast of Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula in the Far East on Saturday, Sputnik reported citing the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS).
"The earthquake originated at a depth of 6 kilometres with a magnitude of 7.0. The epicentre is located 108 kilometres (67 miles) from the city of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatskiy," the academy said.
Shortly after, another earthquake with a magnitude of 4.7 occurred 116 kilometres from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatskiy, the RAS added.
The first quake was felt across the Petropavlovsk-Kamchatskiy urban district, the Russian Emergency Situations Ministry (EMERCOM) said.
Rescue teams are currently inspecting buildings and there is no tsunami threat following the earthquake, according to EMERCOM.
No major aftershocks are expected either, Kamchatka Territory Governor Vladimir Solodov said.
